Fire Service Computer Based Learning Series-
Frequently Asked Questions

1. What are the system requirements for the Fire Service Computer Based Learning Series?

Minimum system requirements are a Pentium II- 350Mhz processor, 800x600 resolution 16-bit color monitor and video card, 30MB hard drive space, and 128MB RAM, Windows 98 or XP operating system, and the Microsoft .NET Framework. We recommend a Pentium III 600Mhz or higher processor and 256MB or more RAM. The FSCBL Series is not tested on Windows 2000 or Windows ME, and no guarantee is made that it will be completely compatible with those operating systems (though Microsoft assures us that it’ll all be OK).

2. My computer isn’t reading the disc.

The most likely cause is that either your disc drive or the disc is dirty. Try using a CD-drive cleaner on your drive, and a radial-type CD cleaner on the disc. If the drive still won’t read the disc, the disc may be faulty- send us the disc and we’ll ship you a new one. If the new disc still doesn’t work, your CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive is probably not compatible with the encoding system used on the disc. Let us know, and return the entire package, and we’ll refund your purchase price.

3. The program won’t install.

Most likely, you do not have the Microsoft .NET Framework installed on your computer. The installer for the Microsoft .NET framework is included on your disc- run the file “dotnetfx.exe” to install. Once you’ve done that, reboot your computer and install the program.

4. The program gives an error message saying “Direct X not detected”

The FSCBL series uses the DirectX interface to play the music and sounds associated with the program. If you don’t have DirectX 8.0 or better, install the DirectX 9 install .exe file located in the DirectX folder on the CD.

5. The program starts, but runs slowly.

You may be using enough memory to slow the program down. Try closing other programs that may be open, rebooting your computer, and running the program again.

6. The program starts, but hangs or otherwise runs improperly.

Follow the steps in 5. Above. If that doesn’t fix the problem, try uninstalling the program (and, if you installed it as part of this installation) the .NET framework using the “Add/Remove Programs” icon in the Control Panel. Reboot your computer and reinstall the .NET Framework (if necessary) and the program. If that doesn’t work, your disc may have been corrupted. Send us the disc and we’ll replace it, and try reinstalling the program from the new disc. If that fails, we’ll refund your purchase price.

If none of the above answers address or solves your problem, we suggest you read the Tech Support Forum, and post your problem if it’s not addressed there. If we can’t help you on the forum, email us.
